Terri and I were sitting in the Carters’ living room with Marianne. Bobby was down at the pizza shop helping with the lunch rush and hadn’t yet heard my news.

“I know how shocking this must be,” I said. “If you need a minute—”

“It’s not me I’m worried about.”

Marianne was on the couch, her elbows on her knees and her fingers steepled under her chin. I could hear the slow, smooth rhythm of her breath.

She chuckled, and then she said, “I have this wild urge to grab our passports and run for the border.”

“I think most folks would have that urge, in your shoes,” I told her. “Although, obviously, that’s illegal. It could get Bobby convicted in absentia, and your assets could be seized.”

She gave a slow nod, looking off into space. Then she said, “I hate that we’re reduced to wanting such… small things now, but if we can’t get out of the big problem, can we at least avoid the media somehow? Bobby’s got enough to deal with without people sticking mics in his face and yelling questions.”

“Yeah, we don’t have a ton of great options, but I was going to recommend that we head over early. If Ms.—Mrs., she prefers that—Barnes is tipping off the press, she’ll be telling them that it’s happening at five.”

“So we go over at four?” Marianne laughed. “Get to jail early! Beat the crowds!”

Terri and I smiled. It was bittersweet. Marianne was picking up quickly on our habit of trying to find humor anywhere you could. It was the only way I’d ever found to get through a crisis like the one she and Bobby were facing.
